2017 Total Solar Eclipse by Ernie Wright of NASA
On Monday, August 21 the partial phase will start at 1:12 PM EDT at "2 O' Clock on the Sun's disk. Totality will start at 2:41 and the duration will be 2 minutes and 30 seconds. (all times are accurate to a few seconds, these times were taken for Batesburg- Leesville (just around the corner from the LARKS West field).
Several club members and Walt's visitors and family put on the Eclipse glasses and enjoyed this once in a lifetime event. We even got a little flying in before the big finale.
Mr Wright has put together a great web page explaining the first total eclipse visible in the United States in 38 years. He breaks down the science so that those of us that are NOT rocket scientists can understand.
LARKS West Field
Total Eclipse August 21,2017
Collection of Solar Eclipse Photos on Google (prior to 2017)
I parked the car and started taking wind and temperature measurements at 0800 on LARKS West. The field was covered in fog and I attempted to rise above the fog with my Phantom 4, but the top of the fog bank was beyond 400 feet above the field.

The fog started to clear by 0900 and I was able to take a few flights with my Sig Kadet Sr and Phantom 4. In between flights, I kept a log of wind and temperature until after the event (~1600). Temperatures taken in the shade (under the field roofing). We were a little worried around 1300, but the skies cleared up by 1400. Weather turned out beautiful, if a little on the warm side. Humidity was pretty high. Below are the best of the 250+ photos taken. Not all are of the greatest quality, but they are included to show the progression of the eclipse. It is very possible that the camera and the camcorder were not at the correct angle to record these photos. Video to come later.....
